Janette K. Hopper

Janette K. Hopper is an active painter, printmaker and performance artist who grew up in Idaho in a creative outdoor family. During college, she served two years as a Peace Corps Volunteer in Maria la Baja, Colombia SA and afterward was a partner in a family ranch in Idaho. Since receiving her MFA from the University of Oregon, she has taught in Denmark, Germany and in the United States at Boise State University, University of Oregon, Columbia Basin College WA, Central Michigan University and, as the Art Department Chair, at the University of North Carolina Pembroke. Mentor/Professors for her MFA include Frank Okada, Ron Graff and Kate Nicholson. Her work has been shown and collected extensively in museums, public venues, colleges and universities and in private galleries nationally and internationally in Germany, France, The Netherlands, Canada, Bulgaria, Italy, Denmark and the United States.

As a recipient of two prestigious Fulbright Scholarships one from Denmark and one from the United States, she spent a year teaching and painting in Denmark where, beginning in Copenhagen, she began to have European one-person exhibits.  Her landscape paintings and prints were included in a Fulbright juried retrospective in Washington, DC and also with New York artists in the Lincoln Center and in many other juried exhibitions internationally. She has exhibited in art centers and galleries in the United States, Germany, France, Bulgaria and Italy and, as a member of Paleur International, in Denmark.

She has works in many permanent collections including: Jordan Schnitzer Museum of Art at the University of Oregon, Eugene OR, The Gilkey Collection Portland Art Museum, Portland OR, the City of Mannheim Germany, Bietigheim-Bissingen Staedtische Gallerie, Bietigheim-Bissingen Germany, the Museum of Humor and Satire in Gabrovo Bulgaria, Padagogische Hochschule Ludwigsburg, Ludwigsburg Germany, Maryhill Museum of Art, Maryhill WA, Gonzaga University, Spokane WA, The National Park Service, Stehekin WA, many works purchased by the Washington State and Oregon State Arts Commission for permanent display in public venues, Center for the Study of Political Graphics, Los Angeles CA, Bald Head Limited, Bald Head Island NC, UNCP Livermore Library, Pembroke NC, Prints Arts Northwest, Portland OR, SGC International, University of Mississippi, Oxford MS and the Marselisborg Gymnaseum in Aarhus Denmark. 

Professor Hopper has presented her work at Monash University in Prato, Tuscany Italy, at the Padagogische Hochschule Ludwigsburg, Ludwigsburg Germany, the Cameron Art Museum, Wilmington NC and The Kress Gallery and the Northwest Museum of Arts & Culture, Spokane WA.  She has prints juried into the International German Linoleum cut Exhibit, Linolschnitt Heute VII, Stadtische Galerie Bietigheim-Bissingen, into “Paper Politics” Traveling Exhibit, Exposition D’Art, Montreal, Canada, into the SGCInternational Traveling Exhibit and permanent collection and into the Museum of Humor and Satire in Gabrovo, Bulgaria.  She produced a body of work (oils and watercolors) for the National Park Service during an Art Residency in Stehekin WA, and participated in the Montana Artist Refuge Basin MT and the No Boundaries International Art Colony in Bald Head Island NCSelected exhibits include: Club de la Presse and the Boulevard de Potes Bordeaux, France, Bürgerhaus Neckarstadt and Mannheim Rathaus, Mannheim, Germany, Frye Art Museum and the Nordic Heritage Museum, Seattle, WA, the Maryhill Museum of Art, Maryhill WA, North Carolina Museum of Art and the North Carolina Museum of Natural History, Raleigh, NC, Los Angeles Municipal Art Gallery, Los Angeles, CA, PAN International Print Project Show, Portland OR and New Zealand, Cameron Museum of Art, the Bellamy House Museum and the Warwick Gallery at UNC-Wilmington, Wilmington NC, SGCI Traveling Show 2012-2017, Loyola University, New Orleans LA, Georgia Perimeter College, Atlanta GA and the Chapel Hill Town Hall, Chapel Hill NC.

Academic Information

Retired Professor Janette K Hopper was the Art Department Chair at the University of North Carolina at Pembroke. During her tenure the Faculty and student body increased substantially and the Art Building (Locklear Hall, ca 1950) was completely renovated and expanded. Also the Art Department was accredited by the National Association of Schools of Art and Design (NASAD). In 2010 she received an Adolph E. Dial Award for Scholarship/Creative Work, a University wide honor.

Previously she was an Assistant Professor at Central Michigan University in Mt Pleasant MI, and Art Faculty Member and Department Lead at Columbia Basin College in Pasco, WA."

She has also taught at the Marselisborg Gymnaseum in Aarhus Denmark, the Padagogische Hochschule Ludwigsburg, Ludwigsburg, Germany, the University of Oregon, Eugene OR and at Boise State University, Boise ID.

She has a MFA in Painting from the University of Oregon, a MA in Secondary Art Education from Boise State University and a BFA in Painting and Drawing from Boise State University.

Artist Statement
My works are inspired by the special places I have experienced while hiking, camping and kayaking. I have explored beaches, mountains, black water swamps, creeks, fields and visited many unique beautiful places. The outdoors long has enchanted me and inspired my art. I have learned how significant fire is to the land, water to the swamps and marshes and the interrelation of all these elements to the animals and plants we call nature. As an artist, Cezanne came close to finding an artistic mode to express his feelings about nature. It is my journey too, as an artist to observe nature and then share with you what I see through the materials and techniques of art. My searching gaze, artistic discipline and my sensitivity to the processes and materials of art can be seen on the website or in my exhibits. Some works also address contemporary issues and make satire or political comment. Other works speak loudly about our dilemma as human beings hoping to join our efforts to spare nature as we know it.

I love our parks and wild lands. I want them sustained not depleted because of exploitation and monetary motives but preserved so that all of us can find a deeper meaning in life. The wealth of solitude, wildness, and beauty that so enriches our inner lives and brings us peace enables us to join together and build a future.
