Andie Freeman

“The subjects of my paintings are cherished and natural objects hanging and moving in a fantastical setting as if the viewer just missed meeting the users. Still life is used as a tool for narrative, giving a glimpse of a life lived by using artifacts of daily life combined with the richness of nature. We live in a disposable world that makes us critical of ourselves, and others, as we reach for the next object to fill the void of human interaction. In this time of rapidly changing lifestyles of modern communities, the art reflects the importance to explore what it means to be human and what mark we leave for current and future generations through daily rituals and interaction with nature.”

Andie Freeman creates contemporary oil paintings that highlight our common stories connecting us to find deeper meaning in our everyday. Freeman’s contemporary approach to still life utilizes color and light, and areas of movement and blur combined with realism to bring human stories into the present, elevating everyday objects to beautiful artifacts. When these cherished objects are given this spotlight, they remind us that we are all connected in this world and our memories are the building blocks of the human experience.

Being surrounded by antiques and history as a child made a big impact on Freeman and created a real love in her for the idea of how interconnected we are through shared stories and history. After a move to the south, she gained a deeper understanding about how these narratives inform our everyday lives, positively and negatively. This idea of time and how we view our common histories has found its way into her work, along with a love for nature which many times acts as a foil to the man-made objects featured in the work.

She attended the College of Charleston in Charleston, SC, where she studied life drawing and painting. After earning her BFA from the College of Charleston, she continued her art education at Portfolio Center, School for Advertising Arts in Atlanta where she studied graphic design. She worked for over fifteen years as an award-winning graphic designer in Atlanta, Los Angeles, and Saint Louis before returning to her first love, painting.

Freeman’s work can be found in public and private collections, including those of the City of Raleigh, the Coastal Discovery Museum of Hilton Head. She is currently the Artist In Residence for the Coastal Discovery Museum through 2022.
